Artist Biography
Doris Rose is a figurative oil painter whose style spans expressionism and realism. Her latest series, Objectified Soul (13-19), depicts subjects with their most precious objects. These objects accompany the paintings in the exhibition space. Through interviewing subjects, her paintings represent how young adults curate material value. Rose shows that art, like religion, ritualizes a process of looking inward.
Rose, who moved from England to Toronto in 2000, has severe chronic migraine disease, compelling her to expose introspective themes in her portraiture.
Rose attended the Ontario College of Art and Design University (09-13), winning the top entrance award, the Doris McCarthy Scholarship. Her thesis series, To Have Pause, de-contextualizes movie screenshots. Introspective drama is expressed through colour and brushstroke. Her work featured in her graduate exhibition, Look Inside, and she has exhibited in the OCADU Annual Figure Show, the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition, the Ontario Science Centre, and Cut and Paste at Project Gallery.
