Commission a Painting
You can commission Doris Rose to create an original artwork. Doris specializes in portraiture but is open to other subject matter.
Doris Rose has completed commissions that range from traditional portraits to couple portraits for weddings and anniversaries, family and child portraits, institutional portraits marking esteemed careers, posthumous portraits to memorialize loved ones, as well as landscapes, flowers, and paintings of new houses.
The process begins with an open email exchange in order to establish the elements that will be included in the work and practical considerations. It will be a collaboration, however, the artist will ultimately take responsibility for her work.
Please see below for more details on two mediums used by the artist:
• Digital Painting
• Oil Painting
Portraiture can be a wonderful way to see yourself through someone else's eyes, be a message of love, remembrance, and esteem, and a great investment to carry into the future.
Doris truly appreciates everyone who wants to be a part of the artwork she creates.
Digital Painting (Colour or Monochrome)
Doris is exploring new, innovative techniques in digital portraiture. The artist uses an iPad to create digital paintings - this enables portraiture with the same quality and level of skill as traditional visual art.
Digital paintings come in the form of a high-quality digital image and can be displayed in many different ways, from prints to cards, family occasions, digital display, social media, etc . In today's world, people consume art and imagery in the digital as well as the physical world. Digital painting opens up many exciting possibilities to bring new techniques and audiences to the centuries-old discipline of portraiture.
If you'd like to have a physical version of your digital commission the artist can provide a gift DVD containing the digital artwork or a high quality art print for extra cost.
Time: Digital paintings take approximately one month to complete.
Cost: Monochrome paintings/drawings cost CAD$550 and colour paintings cost CAD$750.
Reference: Digital portraits are based on a photograph or an in-person sitting in Toronto.
Medium and Process: The iPad portraits are completed on an iPad pro using large, high-quality pixel dimensions. Doris hand-draws the portrait as if it were a traditional painting or drawing.
Once complete Doris will share the artwork image with you in high-quality image files in various file formats as well as a video of the artwork in progress.
If you choose, the artist can provide a high quality giclee print of the artwork for an extra cost based on size.
Visibility and Reproductions: Doris will post the final image on her social media and website. The artist also makes time-lapse videos of the drawing in progress. One is condensed to 30 seconds and the other around 10 minutes. Both will be made available to you along with a high-quality image.

Oil Painting on Canvas
Time: Doris paints in a traditional, academic style that requires a large investment of time. The length of time to complete the painting will vary depending on the size and content. You should expect the painting to take from five months to a year or more for large or complex compositions. A more specific timeline will be provided to you once you contact the artist with your brief. Please note, although it may feel dry in a matter of weeks, an oil painting takes about 6 months to be fully dry and ready to be varnished. If you'd like to have the painting before the full drying time is complete, alternate arrangements will have to be made with the artist to varnish the painting.
Cost: When you email your brief feel free to give an indication of your budget. Doris will send you a quote based on your specifications or a price list relating to standard canvas sizes.
Sittings: Doris will work from a suitably detailed photograph that you provide. If you'd prefer to sit for the portrait in person she will meet with you 1 - 3 times, depending on the complexity of the chosen subject matter.
Doris is happy to travel to you in Canada, the UK, and abroad. She will also receive you in her Toronto studio.
Medium and Process: Doris Rose uses professional artist grade oil paint on a high quality, archival stretched canvas or panel. She applies colour using traditional techniques. Once dry, varnish will be applied over-top. Frames will not be provided, however, the artist can point you towards a reputable framing establishment.
